The Mosaic is a living, generative artwork that turns the Ethereum blockchain into a visual painting — updated in real time, block by block. Think of it as a window into the pulse of the internet's financial layer.
Every second, thousands of transactions are happening across the world — people sending money, trading tokens, creating digital art, or using decentralized apps. The Mosaic turns all of that invisible activity into color, shape, and sound, making it something you can actually see and feel.
On a blockchain like Ethereum, data is organized into blocks. Roughly every 12 seconds, a validator bundles up a batch of recent transactions and adds a new block to the chain — like adding a page to a ledger.
In The Mosaic, each square tile = one block. The grid fills from left to right, top to bottom. When the grid is full, it resets and starts again — like a new canvas.
Inside each block tile, you'll see smaller colored pixels. Each pixel represents one transaction inside that block. The color of each pixel tells you what type of activity it is:
The simplest action on the blockchain. Person A sends ETH or tokens directly to Person B. Like a digital wire transfer. No middleman, no bank.
Example: Sending 0.5 ETH to a friend's wallet.A trade executed on a decentralized exchange (DEX) like Uniswap. Instead of a centralized exchange like Coinbase, the swap happens automatically via a smart contract. No account needed.
Example: Swapping USDC for ETH on Uniswap at the current market rate.The act of creating a new digital item on the blockchain — like publishing a piece of art, a game item, or a collectible. Once minted, that item has a provable record of creation and ownership.
Example: An artist mints 100 editions of a digital painting. Each edition becomes a unique, ownable token.An interaction with a smart contract — a self-executing piece of code that lives on the blockchain. When you use a DeFi app, vote in a DAO, or claim a reward, you're making a contract call.
Example: Claiming staking rewards from a liquidity pool, or voting on a governance proposal.A transaction involving a very large amount of money (over $50,000 equivalent). These glow bright white and pulse on the mosaic. They also trigger a deep sub-bass tone in the sound engine — you can literally hear the money move.
Example: A large fund moving $2M worth of ETH between wallets.Locking up tokens in a smart contract to earn passive rewards — similar to putting money in a savings account that earns interest. Stakers help secure the network or provide liquidity.
Example: Depositing ETH into a liquid staking protocol like Lido to earn staking yield.A smart contract is a program that lives on the blockchain and runs automatically when certain conditions are met. Nobody controls it — not even its creator. Once deployed, it just runs according to its coded rules.
In The Mosaic, most of the colorful, complex activity you see — DeFi swaps, NFT mints, staking — is driven by smart contracts. A plain golden-yellow tile usually indicates a direct contract call.
Every transaction on Ethereum requires a small fee paid in ETH. This fee compensates the validators who process and confirm the transaction. The fee is measured in Gwei — a tiny unit of ETH (1 Gwei = 0.000000001 ETH).
Network is quiet. A great time to transact cheaply. Tiles appear as dim, muted versions of their color.
Network is congested. More competition for block space. Tiles appear bright and saturated.
The header stats aren't just numbers — they're a live read of what the network is collectively doing right now.
Paste any Ethereum wallet address (starting with 0x...) into the tracker bar. The Mosaic will watch every incoming block and highlight any tile that contains a transaction from or to that wallet.
This is useful for tracking your own wallet's on-chain activity, watching a known fund, or simply seeing if your favorite address is actively transacting.
The Mosaic saves a portrait of each day's blockchain activity. Open Settings & Archives and pick a day from the calendar to replay that day's blocks as an animated painting.
The Mosaic can turn every block into a musical note. Each new block triggers a sound based on its hash — a unique fingerprint — and the selected instrument profile. The pitch and tone change with each block.
The Mosaic isn't just randomly placing squares. Every calendar day has its own visual formula (algorithm) that determines the shape of the painting based on the transactions and activities of that specific day:
When the network is calm and gas fees are low, the mosaic draws concentric circular ripples. It calculated the distance from the center (x, y) and paints only in circular steps:
Distance % 5 === 0
When decentralized exchanges are busy, the painting morphs into a flowing wave (a sine wave) showing fluid trading movement across time:
Row = Center + Sine(Col / MaxWidth) * Amplitude
When block space is congested and gas fees surge, the painting forms a glowing fire flame rising from the bottom of the canvas.
When replaying a historical day (using the slider controls), the Hourly Analysis tab on the sidebar drawer reacts live. It shows you the transaction splits and network activity from 0 (midnight) up to the current hour of the block you are scrubbing. This lets you trace how activity evolved throughout the day, block by block.
